Results of the FERMA Survey
Dear Members,
Thank you very much for your participation to the ELD FERMA survey. Please find here the results of the survey
The European Commission is required to submit a report concerning the EU Environmental Liability Directive to the European Parliament. This report will be ready for April -May 2010.
In the outcome of the survey it is relevant to note that
1. Most said that insurance is the main instrument to protect against Environmental risk
2. Most said that it is mainly covered under their General Liability Policy
3. Most said that discussion on the need for additional financial protection is still ongoing
The EC welcomed the information and also indicated to FERMA that they are now focusing on two areas. First the quantification of financial impacts and secondly to raise education knowledge and a better dissemination on the perception of the risks and their financial coverage.
Mrs Alexandra Vakrou, EC representative, will provide FERMA with a questionnaire. The deadline for answers will be end of March. FERMA will raise the attention of the members on this important issue.
It is anticipated that the recommendation of the EC might be to postpone a decision on the financial guarantee scheme due to the difficulty to appreciate the level of efficiency of financial tools available and evaluate the need for mandatory implementation.
